It’s now dusk, and I haven’t managed to catch up with Olivia. She must be avoiding me; the compound isn’t that big, and you would think she would be looking for me too. Even if she wasn’t actively looking for me, I would’ve spotted her, if she wasn’t hiding.

She must hate me, just like Smithy. I wonder if she blames me for Jimmy’s death too; that was my fault. I’m not so sure about Max; I was definitely partially responsible. I just wish we had checked who came out and who came back, but we were all there together. But then again, he’s dead, I guess I deserve some sort of punishment.

I decided to stay with the safety of the group for as long as possible, in response Tank has organised a line of bodies to form a blockade across the door, as if he expects me to race in just before it closes. I can’t see Smithy, Olivia, Mum, or Aunt Maud; I already feel so alone. Given I’m probably going to die tonight, I wish I could’ve had a proper goodbye with everyone, I wish they had told me they forgave me. But I guess they don’t, that’s why they're not here, that’s why I’m alone.

As the first beep rings through the evening air, I run, straight for the row of trees. I hesitate, just for a second. Then, I step into the forest.
